I am interested in how other clinicians have shared the AKOM philosophy with their school communities.

We were asked to lead an all day workshop for Ed Techs on a professional day. Our topic: "Ed Techs Attuned". We had attended a week long conference during the summer. Using what we learned there and showing the "Misunderstood Minds" video provided the framework for the workshop. It was well received.

Our special ed administrator has also acquired the video series Developing Minds" which is available to any teacher/ed tech in the school union.

I share your interest in learning more about how clinicians share the AKOM philosophy with schools. I have been reaching out to various schools and school districts in the Chicago region. Many teachers are familiar with non-labelling strength based approaches, so this part of the philosophy is easy to get accross. Usually, my contacts are made on a child and family basis, working with a particular student and having meetings with the school staff.

In addition, I would like to learn more about how to connect with other clinicians like psychologists and educational specialists. As a child psyhciatrist, I enjoy the team approach, but finding other clinicians trained in this philosophy has not been easy. Any ideas?

I am as well. I have finished the subject path certification and all I heard was how teachers don' t really have time to implement the attuning into their schedule. I am a therapist and a mediator and would love to facilitate as a 3rd party between the student, parents, and teachers to assist, detect and demysify students. Is anyone currently doing this?

Kathy,

I'm a parent who just found out about AKOM and Dr. Levine. My son has done Lindamood Bell, been diagnosed by a pediatrician with ADD, which I don't agree with, yet continues to have issues. The more I read and rely on my engineering education and sensibilities I am beginning to think and hope that he can be helped through some type of cognitive training.

My problem is finding a practitioner like yourself in the Atlanta area if I decide to go with a specific program. I would like to first have my son assessed by someone that has no allegiance to any school of thought. Just provide a detailed assessment.....detect and demystify. I'm guessing and hoping again that the unbiased assessment can be done with STRAND or some similar tool. From the assessment, either the assessor or another practitioner aware of all of the programs can list programs which purport to address these specific findings. After being provided with information and given time to investigate each of those programs, I wouldn't mind having the professional help me decide on one from the list.

Through my experience and from messages on this board from other parents, motivated parents can do more to drive the teachers, schools and possibly the districts to a program because its their child, "their baby". These parents may band together and become a formidable force IF they are aware of other students/parents with similar issues. My mother who just passed last week was an educator for 33+ years and my father was also in education his whole life so I know first hand that most times its not that the teachers or administrators don't care. It may be time, the system or lack of knowledge about possible solutions that keep them from doing more. Do they have time to thoroughly investigate all the programs out there, the courage to stick their necks out and push a particular program and the stamina to jump through all the administrative hoops to have something implemented? I think it would be a stretch most teachers.

My former high tech sales(business development) and current real estate careers, and to a lesser extent, Sy Syms, made me a believer that an educated consumer is the best consumer. Us parents need to be educated, not on a particular program but the underlying schools of though, the options and most importantly, the process we should be taking to assess and remediate. Once we are educated, allow us to decide which program.

If someone is currently facilitating, they need some help marketing because that is what I am looking for and haven't been able to find. They would need to be clear and distinct lines drawn between the detect and demystify "business" and any referrals to programs associated.

I think someone could do well by providing local info seminars directed towards parents. No Donald Trump Get Rich In Real Estate type presentation but truly unbiased information with no hooks.

"Has your child been labeled, ADD, ADHD, Dyslexic, LD,.....but they don't quite fit the label? Every person is unique and these broad labels may not be enough to diagnose your child's specific issues. Come out to ..... Center for meeting to learn how to help detect and demystify your child."

No selling! Just information on the correct procedure a parent should take, sources for UNBIASED, DETAILED testing and interpretation of the testing.

After the interpretation while the parent is deciding on a program is when I think the 3rd party facilitator would be beneficial.

Just my two sense....I mean cents.

It would be great if AKOM listed STRAND test facilities.
