The Mind That's Mine is a program developed by All Kinds of Minds in collaboration with the Schwab Foundation for Learning. Materials created and written by Mel Levine M.D., Dr. Carl Swartz Ph.D., and Melissa Wakely Ph.D.

Description

The Mind That’s Mine is a unique curriculum about thinking and learning designed for upper elementary school students. The program focuses on how children learn, how they learn how to learn, and how their different abilities enable them to acquire the skills they need to succeed academically and socially.

Students discover that each person has a different kind of mind. They research their own unique strengths and weaknesses as well as those of others and they are introduced to the concept of individual affinities. The program encourages students to recognize, tolerate, and respect individual differences in learning and behavior. Overall, students gain an appreciation for individual differences and coping strategies to improve performance.

Objectives

> Encourage students to think about thinking
> Introduce students to the components of the learning process
> Provide students with a vocabulary and conceptual framework that will help them think and talk about learning
> Help students identify personal strengths and weaknesses and be aware of the implications for success and personal fulfillment
> Enable students to improve the efficiency and richness of their learning experiences
> Sensitize students to issues underlying their own behavior and that of their peers
> Encourage students to recognize, tolerate, respect, and celebrate individual differences in learning and behavior
> Extend the knowledge and experience base of the student though family involvement at home

Recommended Uses

“As a sixth grade teacher, I have been able to integrate parts of the curriculum into everyday lessons throughout the school year. The activities and supplemental suggestions have encouraged my students to think about their own minds as well as the minds of their classmates and even their parents! By learning more about their own strengths and weaknesses, my students appreciate each other’s differences and really focus on how they learn best.” – Teacher
