Millions of children struggle in school daily because of differences in
learning. The causes are often unknown, specific problems can be difficult to
pinpoint, and the long-term effects hard to predict. Struggling children are
often misunderstood by the adult world.
APPRECIATING DIFFERENCES
Finding precisely where a breakdown in learning is occurring when a child is
falling behind begins with the teacher, parents, clinicians, and the student
himself working together to create a neurodevelopmental profile—a kind of
balance sheet that accounts for the child’s strengths and weaknesses.
CELEBRATING DIFFERENCES
Including a child’s special interests in an individualized learning plan can
both motivate and help through or around a learning difficulty. For example,
reading about something that interests you can help enhance reading skills. The
same can be said for writing, remembering information, and for concentrating.
We must not only recognize these strategies as practical, but apply them widely
in an effort to help children achieve their potential.
