Schools Attuned Program participants register for one of two “paths,” Generalist or Subject Specialist. The different paths are designed to address the areas of interest and expertise of educators and other related service professionals based on the grade levels and/or subject areas they teach. Both paths share the key features of the Schools Attuned Program and include pre-course work, a core instructional course of 35 hours, and 10 hours of follow-up experiences.

The Generalist Path curriculum builds upon case studies of students and draws from teacher experiences across content areas in grades K-8 settings. This path focuses on early-elementary to early-adolescent developmental challenges.

Additional focus on:
  > Lesson Analysis: the ability to analyze the neurodevelopmental demands of various academic and social tasks, and their impact on student learning profiles and achievement.
  > Alliance Formation: a unique family, teacher, and student partnership to support the child’s neurodevelopmental profile in school and at home.

Who Should Attend
Educators who generally work with students in a variety of academic and social settings, including:

  > An elementary or middle school classroom teacher teaching in multiple content areas
  > A special education teacher supporting students across content areas
  > A school psychologist
  > A school social worker
  > An administrator leading elementary classroom or special education educators

The Subject Specialist Path curriculum builds upon case studies of students and draws from teacher experiences within their subject areas in grades 7-12 settings. This path focuses on early-to-late-adolescent developmental challenges.

Additional focus on:

  > Subject Analysis: the ability to analyze the neurodevelopmental demands of curriculum and instruction, and its impact on student learning.
  > Student Learning Partnership: student, teacher, and parent work together to identify and manage learning difficulties in a particular subject and build the self-advocacy skills to prepare the student for success.

Who Should Attend
Educators who generally work with students in only one subject and/or for limited periods of time and are primarily a member of a small community of other subject specialists, including:

  > A middle or high school classroom teacher teaching in one or two focused content areas
  > A special education teacher supporting students in one or two content areas
  > A department chair
  > A guidance counselor
  > An administrator leading middle or high school educators

Other Considerations in Making Your Selection
Participants who share characteristics with both paths:
If characteristics of both the Generalist and Subject Specialist Path describe your work, you may choose to attend either course. For example, an Art teacher of students in grades K-5 may choose the Generalist Path (which focuses on the developmental characteristics of students in grades K-8), or the Subject Specialist Path (which focuses on the neurodevelopmental demands of one’s subject).

Teams of educators attending from one school:
Schools Attuned sites sometimes offer 2 separate courses – a Generalist Path and a Subject Specialist Path – that operate on the same dates. A team of educators from your school attending the program may include both Generalist and Subject Specialist teachers. The team may decide to stay together and attend the same path in order to support one another through the course and implementation back at their school. They may also choose to divide the team and let individuals select the path that best meets their individual professional needs.
